Colorado Tech Weekly #258: When Turning Ideas into Tech, The Details Matter

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

This week’s headlines have me thinking about details. As a business-person or entrepreneur you are going to tell someone with some technical knowledge “I want to do a thing” and they are going to ask you “Yeah, but how?” which makes me want to ask: At which point is it best to answer the question “Yeah, but how?” At the project management level? UX level? When acquiring resources? When creating the programming?

When is it best to answer that question? Easy! It’s at every level! The more you’re willing to answer questions about the details, the better work you’ll get out of every step of your process.

On the other side, I don’t think it’s ever a bad idea as a developer, project manager, or anyone involved in the implementation process to ask “Yeah, but how?” It’s important for everyone involved to be on the same page.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #245: Discover. Learn. Create. Repeat.

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning (Unless Monday was a holiday. I hope you had a great President’s Day)!

I’m almost 3 months into my career as a software developer. Every day I wonder what I would tell someone who wants to become a developer. I’ve decided the best way to describe the job of a developer is with the four words in the headline.

As a student, whether in a school or learning by ourselves, that process is guided by instructors or ourselves. In a work environment, what we discover and create is usually defined by our clients but the process is still the same.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #37: Accolades, Innovation and Internships

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

This is the 5th CTW post where all 10 stories are about Colorado. I wonder if I could do that every time. I bet I could! However so much of what goes on outside Colorado affects our industry here I can’t just focus on our awesome state alone. Maybe I should consider doing a local edition and a national edition? I’ll think on that later. It’s finals week for me this week so I’ll think on it later.

Speaking of later, next week I get to volunteer for CTA’s C-Level at Mile High on March 6th. It’s the biggest, coolest, geekiest, techiest way to meet some of Colorado’s top-level technology decision makers by bidding for their time, literally! Here are a few tips and tricks for winning those auctions. Hope to see you there!

Colorado Tech Weekly #21: No such thing as too many “helps”

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10 information technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local events every Monday morning!

I backed my first Kickstarter project this week. It’s an online edu-tainment (that’s education and entertainment mashed together) game called BotLogic created by Arvada developer Brad Wedell. Help me help him help kids learn the fun of programming. Was that too many “helps”? Probably. But is there really such a thing as too many “helps”? I say there is no such thing. Just check out all the helpful events this week that has developers helping developers.

I have a break in my courses at Regis until January. I am using that time to work on my own projects. During this break I am focusing on learning UX design and how to implement it with my website. My latest update is about the Discovery phase of UX design. You can find all my updates on my website design project here.
