Colorado Tech Weekly #114: Mind the Talent Gap

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

The Talent Gap is that annoying void between the demand for skilled software developers and the current amount of available skilled software developers. It’s something I’ve heard tech companies talk about since I started this blog over 2 years ago. There have been encouraging efforts by industry groups, companies and tech schools to fill the gap as quickly as they can but filling that gap is still a slow process because the biggest thing that turns new developers into skilled developers is time. It is frustrating for everyone involved. New developers want to have the skills companies need yesterday and companies want more skilled developers 2 months ago!

The best thing companies can do is support these programs, initiatives, schools and the students they teach because they will pay off in the long run. As students, the best thing we can do is keep learning, keep experimenting and show that we want to learn and contribute. Together, with time, effort and focus, we can narrow the Talent Gap.

Colorado Tech Weekly #113: Let the good news continue!

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Every week I see great news about Colorado’s growing tech community. It’s one of the thing that motivates me to finish my coursework, work on projects and publish these blogs.

It makes me wish I could learn all the things now so I can jump in and do great things. Patience is difficult. I can’t learn and do all the things now and trying to fit that amount of effort in that short amount of time is impossible. So I’ll keep working and keep learning and hope the good news keeps coming.

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

You know all the cool buzzwords: “internet of things”, “wearables”, “smart watches”, “drones” and guess what? It’s all happening in Colorado!

This is a week where I had the hardest time ONLY posting 10 news items. I would suggest you follow me on Twitter to see all the news stories I want to put in these posts but am unable to due to my own artificial constraints. Granted I could add more stories, but then I’d add too much so I’ll just stick with 10.

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

A net gain in employment in Colorado tech this week. It’s never fun when I have to justify the good news but nevertheless it’s good news. It’s one of the main reasons I do this newsletter. I want to keep track of how tech companies in Colorado are performing. Between the news about the Colorado Springs companies as well as the tech talent pipeline update from CTA, it’s nice to see we’re doing well.

Colorado Tech Weekly #108: I Need More Ways To Say “Growing”

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

This week has all the signs of growth in the Colorado tech community. We have a Colorado connection partnership which I always love seeing, two acquisitions for Colorado companies and the other normal signs of growth. I’m not complaining about the growth, I just wish I had more ways to phrase it. I think I need to start using a thesaurus.

In case you missed it, and you probably did because you were too busy celebrating Independence Day, I wrote my second “What I’ve Learned About the Colorado Tech Community” post on Friday to celebrate 2 years of Colorado Tech Weekly. I’d love to hear what you think. Thank you for reading!

Colorado Tech Weekly #107: New innovations and sad news

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I mentioned last week how amazing the Colorado tech community was. This week helps prove that. A new way to use technical publications. An open source way to collaborate about maps. New ways to improve job skills. Invisible computers. Gamified prescriptions. It’s all here in Colorado! It’s amazing!

Another thing that constantly amazes me about the Colorado tech community is the “community” part. With that, my heart goes out to the family and friends of Coalfire CEO Rick Dakin who died while on a hike last week. Please consider giving to the Harambee Foundation, a non-profit started co-founded by Dakin’s son, Luke, in his memory.

Colorado Tech Weekly #106: Is there an area of tech that Colorado does not do well?

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

The short answer is “No.” Every once in a while the headlines I compile point out how many different ways Colorado is involved in technology. In this week’s headlines alone we have wireless tech, social media, hardware, startups and 3-D printing. It’s a little mind blowing to think of all the things that are included in tech in Colorado. Then when I try to think of all the money and all the different kinds of people involved my brain shorts out and I have to stare at the wall for a few minutes to let it reboot.

Colorado Tech Weekly #101: Jobs, Growth and New Funding

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

The final judging for Go Code Colorado is this Thursday. This marks the end of 2 1/2 straight months of trying to squeeze my life in between learning, coding and learning and coding. It has made me rethink a few things. I still love making 1s and 0s do all the things I just might have finally figured out how I want to do that.

Colorado Tech Weekly #97: The Force is Strong in Colorado

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

3 different stories about California tech companies bringing at least part of the operations to Colorado in one week, an entire tech startup community full of people who do or do not,  new Star Wars droid thanks to a Boulder company, aerospace’s biggest show in Colorado Springs and I’m pretty sure a week doesn’t go by that you can’t find a wookie somewhere in the state. Add that to our large aerospace industry and other futuristic work in digital health, energy and robotics and we’re a canteen full of alien outlaws with really catchy music away from being Mos Eisley.

Also I may be excited about the newest Star Wars trailer.
