Colorado Tech Weekly #189: Dependable or Boring?

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I am almost at 200 weeks of posting these news summaries. I am proud that I have been able to do it and I feel great whenever I hear that someone got value out of these posts. As with most things technology-related, I feel the need to change things up and keep it exciting and new but I wonder, are these posts seen as dependable or boring?

I’ve been thinking of trying the podcast again, but this time with co-host(s) and more discussion.s I also like the idea of an event board. And the biggest idea I have is turning this project into its own company but that means I have to find ways to make money off of this. I’m thinking a few ads maybe, sponsors for the podcast and a Patreon account with fun extras that I haven’t thought of yet.

I hope you find these posts more dependable than boring for now because I don’t have any time to make these ideas happen. I just started an accelerated, online Calculus II course and it’s kicking my ass so I will focus on that.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #180: I Went to an Event, I Missed an Event and Half a Circle

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

It’s been a while since I’ve celebrated a blog milestone, so let’s do it. One hundred and eighty is a great milestone! It’s half a circle. It’s 20 away from 200. It’s even and… ok enough.

Last week I went to the Develop Denver meetup at Stoneys in Denver. I got to hear the KU fight song but that had nothing to do with the meetup. There were nametags and beer and nice people. What more do you need? I met a few nice developers and a few Galvanize students and instructors. It’s a good, low-key kind of event. You should check it out.

I also completely missed that WordCamp Denver was going on. I use WordPress for my site and despite the ‘uncool’ factor of PHP, it is still one of the most accessable platforms out there.

Be thankful for things this week. I’m thankful for you for reading this and I know it sounds cheesy but I just really enjoy being a part of the Colorado tech community. Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #175: Expanding Companies and Expanding Knowledge

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Working in tech means constantly learning. At no point do we stop and say “Oh, now it all makes sense” because there’s always something new.

This week’s expanding companies include HomeAdvisor, Simpro Software, Jumpcloud and DigitalGlobe. The expanding knowledge comes from the BuiltinColorado article about mentorship, the National Cybersecurity Center and Denver University’s cool new building. That’s not even including the cool upcoming events.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #171: Software Development is Like Home Ownership

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Last week I missed out on Denver Startup Week because I had to deal with home repairs but that doesn’t mean I didn’t learn something about software development.

While I was ripping out carpet, purchasing new carpet and setting up 2 other projects I’ve never attempted before, I realized that software development is very similar to owning a home. There is only so much you can learn from reading. Sometimes you just have to jump in and give it a try to get things done. Having a lack of expertise has kept me from diving into software projects but now that I’ve dived into home repair projects, software projects are a lot less intimidating. After-all, starting over on a software project is way easier than fixing a home repair project.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #154: CTA, BSW, Go Code Colorado and Influence

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I don’t know where to start this week!

Do I start with the Boulder Startup Week highlights from BuiltinColorado? Highlights that do not include Brad Feld in shiny gold shorts as the ring card holder for the Founder Fights? That was my highlight. Or do I start with the news about the Colorado Technology Association’s announcement of their new CEO, Andrea Young? Maybe I should start with being named a top 50 influential person in Colorado tech for the second year in a row? That’s pretty darn cool. Or I could start with being asked to cover the Go Code Colorado Final Event as a blogger? I was part of a winning team last year after all. It’s just all too much. I can’t decide.

This week I will be at ReadyTalk’s FoxDen Launch Party and at the Go Code Colorado Final Event, both of which are on Thursday so let me know if you’ll be there too. I’d love to say “Hi”.

Also if you’re looking for an influential, self-motivated, entry-level software developer, I am looking for a new job so get in touch!

Colorado Tech Weekly #145: Partnerships, Opportunities and a Logo Challenge

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

As someone who has been following Colorado tech companies for the last 145 weeks I took it as a personal challenge when I saw the BuiltinColorado tech startup logo challenge as a personal challenge. I thought, “If anyone should be able to list all 30 companies, it should be me.” Well I still have a few yet to identify. If you’re going to the Built in Brews event on Thursday and you want a cool t-shirt maybe you can get 2 shirts and I’ll help you out. I wear a large. Shhh! Don’t tell Jess Ryan.

After being overwhelmed last week, I feel almost on target this week. Classes are over for now. Birthdays are celebrated and I even get 2 whole days off with my wife and daughter this week! I’m excited to recharge, refocus and get moving on some personal projects. I should probably write up another blog post about those. Until then, here’s some cool news and events!

Colorado Tech Weekly #135: Buses, toys, games and keeping it in Colorado

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

There are so many cool headlines this week! I hope it’s a hint of what is to come for the rest of 2016. I’m looking forward to seeing what cool things come from RTD’s open data. A Colorado-made video game is being featured in a Smithsonian exhibit. Congratulations to Sphero on winning a spot in Richard Branson’s Extreme Tech Challenge at CES. Speaking of CES, there were 43 Colorado companies represented at CES and I expect that number will grow next year.

Then there’s the cool events! CiGDA is showing kids game development in VR and a UX talk at the Joomla Denver meetup highlight some of the cool events this week.

It’s this kind of week that really motivates me.
