Colorado Tech Weekly #224: Failure, Open Source, Freelancing, Tech Jobs and Denver Startup Week (50% More Links THIS WEEK ONLY)

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

If I was still doing an accompanying podcast with these blog posts, this week I would talk forever. There is so much packed into this week’s headlines that I want to talk about!

I’d talk about the importance of being comfortable with failure because of the SparkFun post. Or I could talk about the allure of game development and talk about Mystic Melee. What about interview struggles and strategies that Built in Colorado brings up?

But wait! There’s more!! I could talk about the deceptive difficulty of freelancing (doing the projects is the easy part) because of the Impact Lab article or I could talk about my frustration with the “talent gap” while looking at the Denver Post’s Amazon-related story. But I’d also want to talk about open-source development thanks to the story about DRUD Tech, especially since Hacktoberfest is starting soon.

Speaking of Hacktoberfest, are you participating? I want to give it a shot but I know I’ll need some knowledge/moral/tech/emotional support to make it worth it.  I know SendGrid is participating. It would be cool to find other Colorado tech companies/people/organizations that are involved.

OH WAIT! THERE’S ALSO DENVER STARTUP WEEK! At the end of this post are 10 posts I’ve collected from the from the Colorado tech community to make sure you get the best Denver Startup Week experience.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #183: Holiday Parties and Company Insights

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I love the lists that Jess Ryan does at BuiltinColorado because it gives us a peek into the inner workings of Colorado tech startups that we would not otherwise see. My other favorite resource is company blogs themselves. I love seeing what makes tech employees and their companies proud to be them.

Enjoy the insights and the upcoming tech holiday parties. I’m sure there will be even more next week. Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #155: Nothing Will Replace Meeting in Person

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning (Unless it’s a holiday. I hope you had a great Memorial Day!)!

People often ask me how many events I go to every week and the truth is that I rarely get to go to any of the events I post. I go to maybe one every month. I tell people that the events I post each week are events I wish I could go to. Well last week that week came true!

I went to 2 events, both of them on Thursday. The first event was the ReadyTalk FoxDen Launch Party where I got to demo ReadyTalk’s cool new way to meet in person and remotely. Then I went to the Go Code Colorado Final Event. It was fun to go as an observer this year as opposed to a participant. It was way less stressful! Check out my summary of the Go Code Colorado event here: 2016 Go Code Colorado Winners and Advice On How To Be One.

I wasn’t the only one to review an inspiring tech event. Check out the Google I/O recap from local developer, Kelly Shuster and the the recap by Tim Spark on GlueCon that was in Broomfield.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #140: Sometimes being a day off is ok

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning (Unless it was a holiday. Hope you had a happy Presidents’ Day!)!

Ever have one of those days where you can never remember what day it is even though you know what day it is? It’s pretty annoying. I’ve felt that way for the past few days thanks to a nasty cold. Today’s Colorado Tech Weekly post is off a day too, but that’s because of Presidents’ Day. So because of the holiday, this post could be off a day so that I could recover from feeling off a day. I think…. I don’t know. Maybe I’m still a little bit off.

Colorado Tech Weekly #126: 4, 127.5, 5, 10, 44, 4, 5, 1, 7.5, 50 and 100

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

You are either very curious why the title of this post is nothing but numbers or just very annoyed. Is it a secret code? Is it a pattern? Has Scott lost his marbles?

The answers to these questions are: “No”, “no” and “probably but he still functions well, so we let him be.” Each number is from one of the headlines for this week that helps us quantify what is going on in the Colorado tech community. We have become very good at quantifying with our computers. We are now to the point where we are overwhelmed with quantities and want our computers to calculate qualities which is proving much more difficult than we realized it would be. However, if you look at some of the most successful tech companies in Colorado, that’s exactly what they’re doing.

Colorado Tech Weekly #122: True Crime Edition

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

You probably don’t know this, but as much as I love talking about the Colorado technology community, I don’t work in the industry. Last week I celebrated my 10 year anniversary as a 911 police dispatcher and, even better, I still have my sanity! At least that’s what the voices tell me. I like when the tech industry and law enforcement work together well like in the Level 3 story below. I am not as much of a fan of the SofTec story, but it’s good to see people like that get caught.

Colorado Tech Weekly #119: Boulder, Leaves and Change

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

“The only constant is change” said someone who says things that other people repeat. This is CTW #119 and by pure coincidence I drove up Highway 119 yesterday to look at the changing leaves. I also drove through Boulder to come back home after driving through the mountains. It also appears that most of our tech news this week goes through Boulder.
