Colorado Tech Weekly #278: Reflecting on Success and Creating More

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

We are constantly trying to create more success. It’s to the point that many of us measure success just as a measure of change. If you are just as successful today as you were last year, many people don’t see that as successful and that sucks!

We spend so much time trying to be better than we are now, we often forget to celebrate our current successes. Take some time and celebrate the history of yourself, your company and your community and have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #274: Tech is Taking Over Denver

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Growth, expansion, buy-outs, acquisitions. These words have been constant in the Colorado tech community for last the past 5 years and it doesn’t show any sign of stopping. Denver especially has been seeing a lot of growth in tech companies and jobs. Will Denver become known as a tech city in the same way we think of San Francisco or Seattle? OR are we so excited to talk about exciting growth in an exciting field that we’re losing focus on other great industries in Denver? Or maybe a little bit of both.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #271: Colorado Tech Is Booming, But We Still Need More “Talent”

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

When I started going back to school for my computer science degree 5 years ago, Colorado had a small but thriving inclusive tech community. Today we has a large and thriving inclusive tech community that is still growing! Denver and Boulder share the spotlight, but, like we see with the headlines this week, other Colorado areas are also growing and in need of talented workers.

This tempts me to get on a soapbox about “talented workers” but I’ll keep it short. There is a line between being unable to find talented workers for a role and having expectations that are too high for a role. If you are constantly unable to find someone to fit your role, could your expectations be too high? Can you train someone to fit this role? This is not an easy line to define. If I knew how to accurately define where this line exists, I’d be a very well off consultant but I think it’s worth thinking about.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #265: TECHNOLOGY IS MADE OF PEOPLE!!!

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

When interacting with technology and companies it is very easy to get lost in the names of products and titles. However the harder you look, the more you realize that most tech companies are mostly just about a dozen people who believe in each other. That’s it.

Industry groups, companies, conferences, even meetups are nothing without the people who make them happen.

Celebrate the people around you and have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #256: I Officially Graduate with My Computer Science Degree… and Other News

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

5 years ago I decided to pursue my dream of becoming a software developer and I sign up for my first 3 classes at Regis University. I took every class online while working more than full time as a police dispatcher. I sacrificed time with my family and friends and took classes year round doing homework whenever I could. I did homework at work, at home, while on vacation, in the early morning hours, late at night and all hours in between.

Today I went to the Regis University for the first time. The commencement ceremony was an excellent way to cap off my formal education. for me, my wife and my daughter because they also sacrificed a lot for me. It feels great to be so inspired and inspiring at the same time.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #255: AR, VR and RL

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

When I was looking for my first developer job (it was just last year, but it’s nice to say it was in the past) I was always asked the seemingly helpful question of “What kind of development do you want to do?” and as someone who had never worked in software development I really didn’t know the answer. I am currently working in the credit card payments industry doing C# and .NET development and I’m enjoying it and that never would’ve been my answer (mostly cuz I knew nothing about the credit card payment process).

AR and VR sound like a lot of fun though. Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #249: Bigger Offices and Rural Broadband

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I’m a big fan of doing more to expand broadband into rural areas. One reason for this is completely selfish. I love the idea of having a nice house in a small town while being able to contribute code remotely to amazing projects. My other reason is more altruistic. People who live in rural areas should be offered the same services and opportunities that those of us in metro areas have.

It’s also cool seeing companies announce expansions in space and people. When our tech companies feels comfortable enough to get more space and hire more people, it’s a great sign for our tech community.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #240: Reflection, Direction and an Open Software Engineer Position

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary Flag Colorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning (Unless Monday was a holiday. I hope you had a great, and reflective, Martin Luther King Jr. Day!)!

This week has a good amount of both reflection and direction stories. I never thought too much about the relationship between the two until just now. In order to have good direction, it is important to reflect well on what has happened, where you are and where you intend to be.  I’m in a very good spot for this as I settle in after my first month at Infinicept and as I start my very last class to finish off my CS degree!

Speaking of Infinicept, we are hiring for a mid-senior level Software Engineer! Come work with me and my team! If you have any questions, let me know and I’ll help you out.

Have a great week!
