Colorado Tech Weekly #277: Solidly Built on Colorado’s Lifestyle and Generous Culture

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I had a great time at Denver Startup Week! It was my first time attending and my list of connections on LinkedIn, my To-Read list on GoodReads and my list of ideas for my career and the startup team I work with have all grown!

There was a definite theme to Denver Startup Week. The Colorado lifestyle (Work is important but so is your health and well-being) and the generous culture of our Colorado tech community make Colorado a great place to work. I heard this listening to Erik Mitisek at the Denver Startup Week kick-off on Monday. I heard this from the panel of engineering leaders from Slack, Gusto, Strava and TradeDesk on Wednesday. I heard this from Manuela Cardenas and Meghan McGinnis, both of whom want to move to Colorado from out of state to start their tech careers. And I experienced it when talking to… (ok I tried to list all the names of the people I talked to who embodied this generosity but the list was to long) …anyone and everyone at Denver Startup Week!

Don’t forget, it’s how we live and treat others that makes our community great! Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #273: If Necessity is the Mother of Invention, Time is the Father

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning (Unless Monday was a holiday! I hope you had a great Labor Day!)!

I have been doing this series for over 5 years and I’ve been doing it almost the same way this whole time. I have needed to change things up, to do things differently and more efficient but I have not had the knowledge or the time to make any changes.

The old saying “Necessity is the mother of invention” has always bothered me because some think that if you take away time and resources that people will be forced to innovate. This doesn’t work at all! Invention and innovation require time and resources to experiment and fail.

My new job has me creating and using APIs and just recently I got to dive into React so I found a cool new way to get info about tech events, but in doing things differently I’ve disturbed my comfortable, but inefficient way of doing this. The necessity has been there for a very long time, but only recently have I been able to play with my process to come up with a new way of doing things.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #268: TechStars, Gavlanize and Colorado Tech’s Growing #GiveFirst Influence

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

TechStars and Galvanize are two of the organizations that have been instrumental in the definition of our Colorado tech community. TechStars made #GiveFirst one of their core tenets. This is the idea that you help others when you can without any regard for what, if anything, you get in return. It’s one of my favorite things about our community. It’s great to see their influence spreading and I hope they can bring that same sense of community to more people.

Galvanize has helped to foster an open, inclusive community that has helped people of all walks of life get into and grow our tech community. It’s exciting to see Galvanize celebrate their 100th web cohort class!

These are only 2 of the many organizations that has made the Colorado tech community what it is today and it takes all of us to continue that attitude. It makes me happy to be here.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #255: AR, VR and RL

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

When I was looking for my first developer job (it was just last year, but it’s nice to say it was in the past) I was always asked the seemingly helpful question of “What kind of development do you want to do?” and as someone who had never worked in software development I really didn’t know the answer. I am currently working in the credit card payments industry doing C# and .NET development and I’m enjoying it and that never would’ve been my answer (mostly cuz I knew nothing about the credit card payment process).

AR and VR sound like a lot of fun though. Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #251: Do Not Sacrifice Yourself for Opportunity

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Last week I had a new experience. I had my first full-blown anxiety attack. In the middle of the afternoon my mind seized up while i was trying to develop a new feature for the startup where I work and I panicked. The feature wasn’t huge, but it was the straw that broke the camel’s back after a month of high stress both personally and professionally. I would like to not do it again.

Afterwards, I Googled “anxiety attack” and under self-care it said the best way to treat yourself is to avoid alcohol, reduce caffeine intake, get exercise, consciously manage stress and eat healthy and I read that and I laughed because it basically told me “Do the exact opposite thing you’ve been doing all month.”

Then I read a 5280 Magazine article titled “The 9 Things You Should Know About Colorado’s Work-Life Balance” and I”ll tell you the first thing: We’re not as good at having a balance as we’d like to think. Out of the 251 weeks I’ve written these blog posts, very few of them have not highlighted growth in Colorado tech and with that growth comes new opportunities and with those opportunities comes the urge to be available at any time for those opportunities and with that comes stress.

Take some time to remember that the opportunities we seek are for ourselves, our families and our community and have a great week!
