Colorado Tech Weekly #206: Tech Visas and #GiveFirst with Go Code Colorado

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

What if I just chose one story and one event to talk about instead of blathering on about whatever is inside my head at the moment? Let’s try that.

As someone who is looking for work as an entry-level developer, I should probably pay better attention the the H1-B visa conversation. If I were being completely selfish I would say that companies should just hire developers and teach us, but that’s not realistic at all. There’s no way a company could grow quickly if they don’t have developers who know what they’re doing right now. That’s where these visas come in. I choose to believe that the majority of tech companies use the visas as a last resort.

Wednesday is the Go Code Colorado Final Event and I will be there to write about it. I might even see if I can live-stream it again. The community that has been built around Go Code Colorado is full of some of my favorite tech people in Colorado because they really embody that #GiveFirst attitude that makes the Colorado tech community great. See you there!

This week my daughter starts her summer break. I’m jealous. Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #205: All Good News and Contemplating the Future of Colorado Tech Weekly

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I’ve been thinking of shutting down this newsletter or maybe handing it over to someone else. It’s a thought that has been rattling around my head for about a month. I’m thinking more and more that it’s a good idea.

Since I’ve started Colorado Tech Weekly, BuiltinDenver is now BuiltinColorado and they do their own weekly roundup post, the Denver Business Journal does a weekly tech email, and CTA started Digital Colorado to share tech news stories from various sources. Add to the fact that most of my events come from BuiltinColorado and Meetup.com and you can easily get all the content I provide without me.

This is a great thing! I am one guy who does this newsletter in my limited part-time but those people are passionate professionals with time and resources to do what I’m doing, but just do it better. It would also give me more time to write code because that’s why I started all of this: to get a job as a software developer. And I’ve realized since I started my Twitch streams how much time I haven’t spent actually writing code due to work, school and other obligations so it will be good for me to spend more time doing what I love.

Nothing is being decided anytime soon but if you have any ideas, please let me know.

This week is Boulder Startup Week. Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #204: Some Things Are Bigger Than Tech

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I spent this weekend with my wife in Steamboat Springs celebrating our 8th anniversary. It was great to get out of the Denver area and spend some time without deadlines or schedules. I think my mind is still there.

Regardless of where my mind is, there are still some great news and events this week. Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #203: Mostly About Bots and Broomfield

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

For those who don’t know, there are cities between Denver and Boulder. One of the cities having the biggest growth in tech is Broomfield. It makes me curious to find out what they are doing up there to attract so many tech companies.

Tomorrow I will do another coding Twitch stream. I’m really starting to like doing the stream. I’ve decided to focus on Java and learned a lot about the language last week thanks to one of the people in the chat. It’s great!

This week may the 4th be with you and happy Cinco De Mayo!

Colorado Tech Weekly #202: Two JS conference recaps, two great WWC events and our tech scene is growing up

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

In previous CTW posts I have “complained” that I need new ways of saying that the Colorado tech community is growing. This week our stories point out how we aren’t just growing but we are growing up.  I especially like the Denver Post article by Tamara Chuang on this subject.

I’m going to keep doing my Tuesday coding Twitch stream. I’m starting to get halfway comfortable with it. I’m planning on focusing on writing code challenges in Java until something else piques my interest.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #201: Save-a-click and read BuiltinColorado

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Am I doing clickbait right? I think I might be doing it backwards.

I really do pride myself on finding a variety of news sources, but some weeks it just happens that most of my articles come from mostly one source. This week it’s from BuiltinColorado. They do a great job giving insights into Colorado tech companies and it’s rare I have a CTW post without at least one article from them so you should be reading them anyway (plus they let me post these articles on their site but I’d promote them even if they didn’t).

Last week I updated the theme of my site and did my first Twitch stream and both seemed to go well. Tomorrow I’m going to do another Twitch stream and take on FizzBuzz in C#. If you have time, let me know what you think!

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #200: Zayo and eBags Get New Leadership, Some Job Tips and a Twitch Stream

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

There is only one thing I’ve done consistently for 200 weeks in a row… and this is it!! I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for this long. I had these big ideas that when I got to number 200 I’d do some sort of meetup event or restart the podcast but those require much more social interaction than I’m capable of doing. Thank you for reading and sharing these posts. I really enjoy doing what I can to advertise the great people who make up the Colorado technology community.

Even though I won’t be doing a meetup or a podcast, I have decided to do a weekly Twitch stream. My plan is to do CodeEval challenges in Java and C#, then find a way to incorporate those challenges into a simple game using Unity3D. Why? Because I want to write more code and this is a good way to keep me honest. So if you’re so inclined, I’ll be on Twitch on Tuesday, from 4p-7p here: https://www.twitch.tv/chickenheed

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #197: I think JavaScript might be catching on

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Only 3 events listed this week are not directly related to JavaScript and I’ll bet you can find at least one person at each of those events who is capable of talking your ear off about it.

JavaScript and everything around it shows off what can happen when developers think, “What if…?” both good and bad. It’s also my reminder that, at least for me, learning languages is fairly easy but learning how and when to use frameworks is much more difficult.
