Colorado Tech Weekly #273: If Necessity is the Mother of Invention, Time is the Father

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning (Unless Monday was a holiday! I hope you had a great Labor Day!)!

I have been doing this series for over 5 years and I’ve been doing it almost the same way this whole time. I have needed to change things up, to do things differently and more efficient but I have not had the knowledge or the time to make any changes.

The old saying “Necessity is the mother of invention” has always bothered me because some think that if you take away time and resources that people will be forced to innovate. This doesn’t work at all! Invention and innovation require time and resources to experiment and fail.

My new job has me creating and using APIs and just recently I got to dive into React so I found a cool new way to get info about tech events, but in doing things differently I’ve disturbed my comfortable, but inefficient way of doing this. The necessity has been there for a very long time, but only recently have I been able to play with my process to come up with a new way of doing things.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #271: Colorado Tech Is Booming, But We Still Need More “Talent”

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

When I started going back to school for my computer science degree 5 years ago, Colorado had a small but thriving inclusive tech community. Today we has a large and thriving inclusive tech community that is still growing! Denver and Boulder share the spotlight, but, like we see with the headlines this week, other Colorado areas are also growing and in need of talented workers.

This tempts me to get on a soapbox about “talented workers” but I’ll keep it short. There is a line between being unable to find talented workers for a role and having expectations that are too high for a role. If you are constantly unable to find someone to fit your role, could your expectations be too high? Can you train someone to fit this role? This is not an easy line to define. If I knew how to accurately define where this line exists, I’d be a very well off consultant but I think it’s worth thinking about.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #269: “Blockchain”, “Cybersecurity”, “Diversity” Are Not Just Buzzwords Here

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Buzzwords in technology can be annoying as they are exciting. They are annoying because they are often used as click-bait and by people who don’t understand the buzzwords but who really want to make some money off of them.

Looking at this week’s headlines, I’m proud to see that while our community is covered in buzzwords, these headlines are backed by people putting in real time, effort and money into turning their innovative ideas into success. That’s amazing!

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #268: TechStars, Gavlanize and Colorado Tech’s Growing #GiveFirst Influence

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

TechStars and Galvanize are two of the organizations that have been instrumental in the definition of our Colorado tech community. TechStars made #GiveFirst one of their core tenets. This is the idea that you help others when you can without any regard for what, if anything, you get in return. It’s one of my favorite things about our community. It’s great to see their influence spreading and I hope they can bring that same sense of community to more people.

Galvanize has helped to foster an open, inclusive community that has helped people of all walks of life get into and grow our tech community. It’s exciting to see Galvanize celebrate their 100th web cohort class!

These are only 2 of the many organizations that has made the Colorado tech community what it is today and it takes all of us to continue that attitude. It makes me happy to be here.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #267: Big Names, Small Names and New Names

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

One of my favorite things about doing this blog is putting the news about the big name companies next to the lesser known companies because big tech news is big tech news regardless of the size of the company.  I am also constantly surprised to find Colorado tech companies that I don’t know about. It really amazes me to think about how big our tech community really is.

Colorado Tech Weekly #266: Leadership Matters and Fintech Grows in Denver

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

The 2 subjects of this week’s headline directly affect me on a daily basis. As an employee of a startup with less than 10 people, our company is not only affected by the decisions made by our leadership but also the moods and attitudes that are shown by our founders, our managers and each of us. Leadership is not dependent on job title in a small organization, however the people with the big job titles have the most direct affect on the mood and culture of an organization. I’m excited to see what’s in store for OpenWorldLearning and Colorado Technology Association after their leadership changes.

My startup is also involved in fintech and seeing The Funding Circle opening an office here and seeing OnDeck grow their presence here makes me excited about the industry I get to work in.

I hope there’s something to get you excited this week! Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #265: TECHNOLOGY IS MADE OF PEOPLE!!!

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

When interacting with technology and companies it is very easy to get lost in the names of products and titles. However the harder you look, the more you realize that most tech companies are mostly just about a dozen people who believe in each other. That’s it.

Industry groups, companies, conferences, even meetups are nothing without the people who make them happen.

Celebrate the people around you and have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #264: Agriculture, Blockchain, Funds, Hiring and Offices

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I could probably go on long tangents on most of the subjects in this week’s headline but I won’t because I like to keep my intro short so you can find the headlines you’re interested in and get on with your day. Let’s see if I can sum up each tangent:

  • Agriculture is an amazing industry for high-tech innovation that few people think about.
  • Blockchain tech interest is still more hype than knowledge.
  • Getting funding is cool, but not needing it is even better.
  • Colorado is still a great place to look for a software job. Speaking of which, my company, Infinicept, is looking to hire a mid-senior level .NET engineer. Come work with me!
  • How you set up your office can be both a great way to waste time and an important set of decisions to make your company more productive. Speaking of setting up offices, Infinicept got to set up our new office at Galvanize Denver Golden Triangle so if you end up at Galvanize, come say hi!

Have a great week!
