Colorado Tech Weekly #106: Is there an area of tech that Colorado does not do well?

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

The short answer is “No.” Every once in a while the headlines I compile point out how many different ways Colorado is involved in technology. In this week’s headlines alone we have wireless tech, social media, hardware, startups and 3-D printing. It’s a little mind blowing to think of all the things that are included in tech in Colorado. Then when I try to think of all the money and all the different kinds of people involved my brain shorts out and I have to stare at the wall for a few minutes to let it reboot.

Colorado Tech Weekly #101: Jobs, Growth and New Funding

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

The final judging for Go Code Colorado is this Thursday. This marks the end of 2 1/2 straight months of trying to squeeze my life in between learning, coding and learning and coding. It has made me rethink a few things. I still love making 1s and 0s do all the things I just might have finally figured out how I want to do that.

Colorado Tech Weekly #99: Is Colorado the best place for women in tech?

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

It was almost a year ago that I bragged about the great network of IT women in Colorado. There are some great groups and inspiring leaders here and many of them are women.

This week’s headlines and events are just a nice reminder. When I get serious about my job search, I hope I can find a friend to search with so I can go to some of those great WomenWhoCode events like the interviewing panel highlighted in the Events section. Speaking of helpful, inspiring people, this Sunday is Mother’s Day. Happy Mother’s Day, Mom!

Colorado Tech Weekly #98: Photobucket acquires all the things, social pot, Apple Watch and Go Code Colorado

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Since I sort through all my news stories on Sunday so this can go out Monday morning I’m typing this up from the offices of Rally Software in Boulder! Woohoo! I’m working in a software development office writing software! My software has nothing to do with Rally Software, but that’s just the details.

Rally is awesome enough to host the Go Code Colorado Mentor Weekend. It’s an incredible experience for anyone who’s even halfway interested in the idea of starting a tech startup to benefit Colorado. I’m definitely going to have to write a separate blog post about the Go Code Colorado Challenge. I have way more to say about it then you want to read right now. Until then, the news…

Colorado Tech Weekly #97: The Force is Strong in Colorado

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

3 different stories about California tech companies bringing at least part of the operations to Colorado in one week, an entire tech startup community full of people who do or do not,  new Star Wars droid thanks to a Boulder company, aerospace’s biggest show in Colorado Springs and I’m pretty sure a week doesn’t go by that you can’t find a wookie somewhere in the state. Add that to our large aerospace industry and other futuristic work in digital health, energy and robotics and we’re a canteen full of alien outlaws with really catchy music away from being Mos Eisley.

Also I may be excited about the newest Star Wars trailer.

Colorado Tech Weekly #95: GoCodeColorado and More Security News

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I am so excited/nervous/apprehensive/scared/excited for the GoCodeColorado Apps Challenge Weekend this weekend. This will be the first time I say in public “I know how to code. Give me a problem to fix” and just typing that makes my imposter syndrome kick in. Then yesterday I saw who the five finals judges are and that kicked my excitement/nervousness into overdrive. Following tech news in Colorado for 95 weeks, these 5 people are definitely leaders in the Colorado tech community and it’s so awesome that they volunteer their time for this.

So I’ll be spending my entire week at my laptop getting homework done and trying to learn all the things to prepare for the weekend. Wish me luck!

Colorado Tech Weekly #94: All About Denver, Security and Maybe Even Google Fiber?

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

OK so maybe the Google Fiber excitement is a little premature, but I heard a baseless rumor that it’s going live next week in Boulder but only for people to Instragram pictures of organic food. If you have your own baseless Google Fiber rumor I’d love to hear it.

In my prediction post in December, I predicted that the Colorado’s information security industry would double! With this week’s news about ProtectWise and last week’s news about Webroot, I’m feeling pretty smart so far.

Colorado Tech Weekly #93: Too Many Excitements!!

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I have no doubt that grammar snobs read my headline and thought “It’s supposed to be ‘Too much excitement!'” but those grammar snobs would be wrong!

I’m excited about the Denver Post TechKnowBytes blog being rebranded to Tech+ with more and more good content. I’m excited that I won two tickets to Denver Comic Con at CTA’s C-Level @ Mile High. Speaking of C-Level, I’m really excited for the new ColoradoTech.biz directory that was unveiled at C-Level. I’m excited that a Colorado company is responsible for Sling TV which is finally starting to change the way we get TV in a big way. I’m excited to participate in my first hackathon next month at the GoCodeColorado hackathon. And I’m excited to start putting my social capital to use by looking for a developer job in May.

See, it’s not that I have too much excitement for one thing, I just have too many things to be excited about!

Colorado Tech Weekly #84: Boggled by big numbers

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I hope you had a great Martin Luther King Jr. Day yesterday. After the reactions to events in Missouri, New York and Ohio in the past 6 months MLK’s words and ideas are as important now as they ever were.

In the interest of brevity and comprehension we often abbreviate numbers when talking about large amounts of money. I wonder if seeing all the zeros associated with these large sums will change our understanding:

  • Level 3 is planning a $500,000,000 debt offering.
  • Latisys just got purchased for $675,000,000.
  • Last quarter saw $342,200,000 venture capital deals in Colorado with $134,056,000 of that money going to tech companies.

That’s a lot of zeros. I’m not sure writing out the numbers helped my comprehension at all.
