Colorado Tech Weekly #145: Partnerships, Opportunities and a Logo Challenge

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

As someone who has been following Colorado tech companies for the last 145 weeks I took it as a personal challenge when I saw the BuiltinColorado tech startup logo challenge as a personal challenge. I thought, “If anyone should be able to list all 30 companies, it should be me.” Well I still have a few yet to identify. If you’re going to the Built in Brews event on Thursday and you want a cool t-shirt maybe you can get 2 shirts and I’ll help you out. I wear a large. Shhh! Don’t tell Jess Ryan.

After being overwhelmed last week, I feel almost on target this week. Classes are over for now. Birthdays are celebrated and I even get 2 whole days off with my wife and daughter this week! I’m excited to recharge, refocus and get moving on some personal projects. I should probably write up another blog post about those. Until then, here’s some cool news and events!

Colorado Tech Weekly #140: Sometimes being a day off is ok

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning (Unless it was a holiday. Hope you had a happy Presidents’ Day!)!

Ever have one of those days where you can never remember what day it is even though you know what day it is? It’s pretty annoying. I’ve felt that way for the past few days thanks to a nasty cold. Today’s Colorado Tech Weekly post is off a day too, but that’s because of Presidents’ Day. So because of the holiday, this post could be off a day so that I could recover from feeling off a day. I think…. I don’t know. Maybe I’m still a little bit off.

Colorado Tech Weekly #139: Startups, cabs, sprinklers, Super Bowl ad and jobs

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Every week I do this I am blown away by all the amazing things we do with technology in Colorado. Half the time I stare at my screen, dumbfounded, trying to find a way to summarize all 10 stories into one coherent summary. I usually can’t find a way to summarize so I just find another subject to talk about that’s somewhat related to at least one article. Or I just ramble about not knowing what to say… like this.

Hey did you hear I am now doing a podcast version of Colorado Tech Weekly? You can find individual episodes on Soundcloud, you can subscribe to the podcast here and you can support the show on Patreon.

I record the shows Monday afternoons and I would love to hear your opinions on the headlines so I can include them in the podcast. So send your opinions, comments or random obscenities to feedback@coloradotechweekly.com.

Colorado Tech Weekly #125: Things improved, soapbox avoided and GO VOTE!

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Tomorrow is ELECTION DAY! I know there’s no large-scale elections, but honestly the local elections impact our lives more than the big ones. I could easily jump on a soapbox about this but I’ll cut myself off before I get going. However, if you live in Jefferson County and still haven’t decided who to vote for, contact me and I’ll help you out.

I am homework free for the rest of the year, so look forward to some project updates, new projects and general blog posts about learning programming. I’m looking forward to expanding my voice on this site, instead of just churn out a top 10 list every week. That’s not to say I don’t like my top 10 lists. I do. They look like this…

Colorado Tech Weekly #103: It’s fun watching the people you admire succeed

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Congratulations to Rally Software for being acquired. When I first started reading about Colorado software development Rally Software was one of the first companies I heard about as a “Place you want to be.”

Congratulations to J.B. Holston for his appointment as a Dean at DU. I consider J.B. Holston to be one of the leaders of the Colorado tech startup community. I’ve only had brief encounters with him online, but he is always welcoming and willing to listen.

I love watching the people I admire succeed. It gives me hope and motivates me to continue working.

Colorado Tech Weekly #102: Winning the Go Code Colorado Challenge, Visiting Denver Comic Con… Oh and Colorado Tech News

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning (Unless it’s a holiday. I hope you had a great Memorial Day)!

This past week has been amazing!! Thursday night my Go Code Colorado team, MentorMatter, was one of 3 teams that won a $25,000 contract with the State of Colorado. I worked as a developer on the team to create our site using the Meteor JavaScript framework. I had no prior knowledge of Meteor before the challenge so it was amazing to be able to re-familiarize myself with JavaScript, learn Meteor and contribute to the project all in less than a month. Phew!

This weekend my wife and I got to experience our first ever Comic Con at Denver Comic Con thanks to 2 passes I won from the CTA C-Level event (Thanks for that, by the way)! It was overwhelming, amazing, fun, crazy and amazing (yes, I know I said amazing twice). I loved that Denver Comic Con featured local game development companies and maker spaces with their own section. I would list them all, but I’m afraid I would leave some out. It was so inspiring talking to Colorado authors, artists and developers who get to make a living being creative everyday.

I could go on and on about the Go Code Colorado Challenge and Denver Comic Con and I probably will in separate blog posts, but you didn’t open this post to read about that so without further ado…

Colorado Tech Weekly #85: New. Better. More. Bigger. Faster.

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Every week, things in Colorado are new, better, more, bigger and faster. It can be intimidating when you’re looking to get into the software development world. However instead of it being intimidating, I choose to think of it as a good sign. As long as the industry continues to grow and change, there’s room for new developers.

I may be saying these things more for myself than anyone else. Make this week better than last week! I may also be saying that more for myself than anyone else.

Colorado Tech Weekly #64: Power of two

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning (Unless Monday is a holiday. Hope you had a great Labor Day weekend)!

64 is a power of two. It’s amazing how powerful the number two is. Do you ever stop to think that everything we do with computers is all just ones and zeros? It blows my mind whenever I think about it.

I got to witness the power of two in a completely different way this weekend. I saw my best friend get married. It’s been a while since I’ve been to a wedding and it was a very moving thing to be a part of my best friend’s wedding. Congratulations Dan and Jen!

Colorado Tech Weekly #60: The only thing that is constant is change

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Did you know that my headline is a quote attributed to Greek philosopher Heraclitus? I wonder if his friends called him Cletus.

See, this is the best/worst thing about the internet. I was all set to be done with my post, but then I spent 10 minutes learning all about Cletus because the knowledge so readily available. Luckily I was able to regain my train of focus and, speaking of change, I need to get back to my calculus homework.
