Colorado Tech Weekly #171: Software Development is Like Home Ownership

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Last week I missed out on Denver Startup Week because I had to deal with home repairs but that doesn’t mean I didn’t learn something about software development.

While I was ripping out carpet, purchasing new carpet and setting up 2 other projects I’ve never attempted before, I realized that software development is very similar to owning a home. There is only so much you can learn from reading. Sometimes you just have to jump in and give it a try to get things done. Having a lack of expertise has kept me from diving into software projects but now that I’ve dived into home repair projects, software projects are a lot less intimidating. After-all, starting over on a software project is way easier than fixing a home repair project.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #118: The Work That Causes the Headlines

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Every once in a while I have to remind myself that most of the news behind these headlines are the culmination of months or years of work. The awards, acquisitions, mergers and events are the headlines but the important part is the work and time put into those events long before they become headlines.

Colorado Tech Weekly #36: Online video innovation. Leadership changes. Student support.

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Two of this week’s national stories have to do with supporting students who want to become software developers. As one of those students it brings up the internal (eternal?) argument between traditional and non-traditional education programs. I got burned by a non-traditional school which is why I’ve decided to go back to a more well-established school in Regis University. That is not to say I am against non-traditional programs such as the DaVinci Coders program in Louisville and gSchool at Galvanize in Denver, but if you’re considering jumping into the software development field it’s something you should spend some time considering.

Colorado Tech Weekly #31: Do whatever you need wherever you want

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local events every Monday morning!

I felt like I could’ve easily posted 20 stories, but part of the fun of these posts is narrowing it down to the 10 most interesting stories of the week. I’m really curious about the trend of the technology industry allowing us to work from anywhere. Whether it’s cloud services, coworking spaces, connected cars or wearable devices we are increasingly allowing (forcing?) us to work from wherever we want.

I am looking forward to my first Built in Brews event this Thursday. Since I like beer and I like smart, ambitious people, it should be a good time.
