Colorado Tech Weekly #202: Two JS conference recaps, two great WWC events and our tech scene is growing up

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

In previous CTW posts I have “complained” that I need new ways of saying that the Colorado tech community is growing. This week our stories point out how we aren’t just growing but we are growing up.  I especially like the Denver Post article by Tamara Chuang on this subject.

I’m going to keep doing my Tuesday coding Twitch stream. I’m starting to get halfway comfortable with it. I’m planning on focusing on writing code challenges in Java until something else piques my interest.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #197: I think JavaScript might be catching on

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Only 3 events listed this week are not directly related to JavaScript and I’ll bet you can find at least one person at each of those events who is capable of talking your ear off about it.

JavaScript and everything around it shows off what can happen when developers think, “What if…?” both good and bad. It’s also my reminder that, at least for me, learning languages is fairly easy but learning how and when to use frameworks is much more difficult.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #196: It’s All About Community. Thank You For Being Awesome.

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Maybe I’m naive or too optimistic or.. some other word I can’t think of. Maybe I’m still feeling the high of being done with my Calculus 2 course. But I am feeling the love in the Colorado tech community.

I struggle a lot with the question of “What kind of programming do you want to do?” because the technology being used at a company isn’t as important to me as the culture of the company. I’m just happy at the thought of being paid to make 1s and 0s do things with other nice, talented people. There’s a lot of great people in the Colorado tech community who make our community a place where people want to come and work and create and that’s awesome.

Thank you for being awesome. Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #161: Real Space, Fake Space, Real Bots, Chat Bots

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

This week there was cool news about real space with Lockheed Martin’s involvement with the Juno space probe. There is also some cool news about a space-themed game published by Serenity Forge.

The chat bot is thanks to BillHero in Ft. Collins so you can pay your bills using Facebook Messenger. And when it comes to real bots, I have finally started developing my first Sphero app. It’s a very simple app that allows you to drive the Sphero and see data from the Sphero sensors so you can figure out if you and your robot are thinking the same thing.

Have a great week! Be kind to each other.

Colorado Tech Weekly #137: A good week for companies with ‘Z’ in their name

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Zillow is going to grow. Dizzion is expanding. Galvanize gets funding. And Sierra Nevadza will need to hire to fulfill their awesome cool NASA contract. OK, there’s no ‘Z’ in Sierra Nevada but that’s still pretty exciting news for them. It’s great seeing front range companies grow!

I’m going to start figuring out how to turn this weekly post into a podcast and I’m going to start looking for tweets with the hashtag #coloradotech to build my lists. I’m looking forward to interacting with you in new, fun ways!

Colorado Tech Weekly #115: Yack, yack yack. Get a job!

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I just finished a course on Java programming and I now have 23 credits left until I graduate with my Computer Science degree from Regis University. Since I’m going to school part-time, I’m still about a year away from my degree and, frankly, it’s driving me nuts.

This week’s stories highlight 7 growing tech companies that are hiring, 5 entry-level job opportunities and one hiring fair. Half of me wants to just jump in and start applying for these jobs, half of me thinks I’ll never feel ready to apply for a development job, half of me wonders how to successfully balance imposter syndrome with pride in my skills and half of me wonders how there is suddenly two of me!

Colorado Tech Weekly #114: Mind the Talent Gap

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

The Talent Gap is that annoying void between the demand for skilled software developers and the current amount of available skilled software developers. It’s something I’ve heard tech companies talk about since I started this blog over 2 years ago. There have been encouraging efforts by industry groups, companies and tech schools to fill the gap as quickly as they can but filling that gap is still a slow process because the biggest thing that turns new developers into skilled developers is time. It is frustrating for everyone involved. New developers want to have the skills companies need yesterday and companies want more skilled developers 2 months ago!

The best thing companies can do is support these programs, initiatives, schools and the students they teach because they will pay off in the long run. As students, the best thing we can do is keep learning, keep experimenting and show that we want to learn and contribute. Together, with time, effort and focus, we can narrow the Talent Gap.

Colorado Tech Weekly #70: The spirit of cooperation stays true

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

If you have spent any time in the business networking world (networking with people, not machines), you’ve seen dishonest enthusiasm. You’ve seen the mouth-only smiles, heard the distracted golf claps and felt the half-assed handshakes when announcing good news about your company. While I only have an outsider’s online view of the Colorado tech community right now, when I do see enthusiasm for other peoples’ news it appears to be genuine enthusiasm! It’s a great thing to see!

Colorado Tech Weekly #39: Taking it one step at a time in awesome Colorado

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I think it’s about time I stop being surprised by the amount of tech news in Colorado. This is the 3rd week in a row that all 10 stories are from Colorado and I love it!

I had a blast volunteering for C-Level @ A Mile High on Thursday! It was amazing to talk to, and work with, so many people who have already achieved milestones in their careers that I can only dream about right now. It’s like running a marathon where the path doubles back on itself. I got to briefly see people who are way ahead of me and I want to be there! I gotta take one step at a time though. I’ll get there eventually.

Colorado Tech Weekly #38: C-Level at Mile High and Promising Futures

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

This week brings us yet another COLORADO ONLY CTW post! It always makes me happy when this happens. This Thursday I get to volunteer at the CTA’s C-Level @ A Mile High. I’m really looking forward to it! I’m sure I will be completely overwhelmed. I hope to see you there.

I curate these posts not only to keep myself informed, but also to keep myself motivated and after seeing all the exciting things brewing in Colorado I wish I could start applying for developer positions right now. Patience is a hard thing to have, but it’s nice that there’s plenty of news to keep me motivated.
