Colorado Tech Weekly #260: Read All These Stories. Consider All These Events

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

There are some weeks where I find a theme in the stories I share. There are other weeks where I just rant about something else before presenting the headlines. This week I’m not sure what to do so read all these stories and consider going to as many of these events as you can because I can’t decide.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #259: Growing and Being New and Honesty

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning (Unless Monday was a holiday. I hope you had a good Memorial Day)!

I’m coming up on 6th months as a junior developer. I’m fairly certain I’m doing well. It’s hard to tell with the imposter syndrome and the constant learning about technology and the business logic, but I think it’s going well. I attribute this to being honest with my co-workers and myself.

As someone looking for my first job as a developer,  I spent a lot of time learning how to sell my knowledge, skills and abilities. After you get the job, it’s important to be realistic about your knowledge, skills and abilities with everyone, especially yourself. It’s not easy to say “I don’t understand” or “This is going to take longer than we planned” but these are important things for junior developers to say when we need to.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #191: Sometimes Tech is Too Broad of a Topic

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I like when I can find a theme in the headlines I share, but I also like highlighting all the different areas that are covered in the Colorado tech community. If there’s a way to make ones and zeros do a thing, it’s being done here in Colorado. Even better, it’s done in an inclusive, supportive community. It’s just one of the reasons I look forward to being able to contribute to the Colorado tech community full time.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #190: Go Code Colorado, C-Level at Mile High and Why It’s Good to #GiveFirst

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Wednesday is the Go Code Colorado Kick-Off event. I’ll be there! Say “Hi” if you can.

The Go Code Colorado event in 2015 was my first-ever “hackathon” and I got to be a part of a winning team of amazing people who I still love talking with when I get a chance. I put hackathon in quotes because the Go Code Colorado challenge is much more of an entrepreneurial challenge with code than it is a straight up hackathon. It’s still a great challenge that I love being a part of in anyway I can.

Speaking of events I enjoy being a part of, it’s that time of the year that I start promoting CTA’s C-Level @ A Mile High. It’s CTA’s yearly silent auction where you can bid for fun items and event packages, but the big draw is the silent auction for time with some of the top C-Level executives in the Colorado technology community.

I enjoy promoting Go Code Colorado and C-Level because when I first started looking into the Colorado tech community in 2013 these were some of the first organizations to be welcoming and inviting to someone who had no idea what he was doing.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #146: Which is Better? Planning or Improvising?

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

The answer to the headline is “Yes.” I know. It’s a trick question and it’s Monday and you’re trying to figure out what it was you ate yesterday that has you feeling a bit off today (maybe the 5 pounds of chocoloate?) and you’re still trying to readjust after the snow storm interrupted your week last week so it’s not nice to give you a trick question and I’m sorry.

Planning is important regardless of what all the shotgun innovators tell you. If you want to do something well, you have to make a plan. Most of the headlines I share every week are the results of people setting a goal, making a plan and spending years going for it. Today I finished my Software Requirements Specification for my app for my police officers. It feels nice to have a plan.

But what about improvising? The best improvisation comes after the plan. It’s like the rescheduled events listed this week. There was a plan but things got changed, so you improvise and continue on. This is the best kind of improvisation.

Plan. Then improvise. Please.

Colorado Tech Weekly #145: Partnerships, Opportunities and a Logo Challenge

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

As someone who has been following Colorado tech companies for the last 145 weeks I took it as a personal challenge when I saw the BuiltinColorado tech startup logo challenge as a personal challenge. I thought, “If anyone should be able to list all 30 companies, it should be me.” Well I still have a few yet to identify. If you’re going to the Built in Brews event on Thursday and you want a cool t-shirt maybe you can get 2 shirts and I’ll help you out. I wear a large. Shhh! Don’t tell Jess Ryan.

After being overwhelmed last week, I feel almost on target this week. Classes are over for now. Birthdays are celebrated and I even get 2 whole days off with my wife and daughter this week! I’m excited to recharge, refocus and get moving on some personal projects. I should probably write up another blog post about those. Until then, here’s some cool news and events!

Colorado Tech Weekly #128: Want Your Choice in Dev Jobs in Colorado? Learn JavaScript

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Saying “Learn JavaScript” is like saying… well I can’t think of a good analogy but it’s not that easy. JavaScript is the utility player of web development. JavaScript is mainly used in web apps to make things happen in the browser so the web app doesn’t have to constantly send data back and forth with the server and it’s been made to do… just about everything.

But It’s not enough just to learn the language, you also have to learn a framework and choosing a JavaScript framework can be intimidating. You want to learn a framework that is popular and growing, but not one that is too overhyped or too saturated with talent. This is very difficult to figure out.

To get you started, here’s a recently published blog post about JavaScript Frameworks for 2016 and Beyond. From what I’ve seen, the most popular and best framework to learn right now is AngularJS.

I hope you have a happy Thanksgiving!

Colorado Tech Weekly #102: Winning the Go Code Colorado Challenge, Visiting Denver Comic Con… Oh and Colorado Tech News

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning (Unless it’s a holiday. I hope you had a great Memorial Day)!

This past week has been amazing!! Thursday night my Go Code Colorado team, MentorMatter, was one of 3 teams that won a $25,000 contract with the State of Colorado. I worked as a developer on the team to create our site using the Meteor JavaScript framework. I had no prior knowledge of Meteor before the challenge so it was amazing to be able to re-familiarize myself with JavaScript, learn Meteor and contribute to the project all in less than a month. Phew!

This weekend my wife and I got to experience our first ever Comic Con at Denver Comic Con thanks to 2 passes I won from the CTA C-Level event (Thanks for that, by the way)! It was overwhelming, amazing, fun, crazy and amazing (yes, I know I said amazing twice). I loved that Denver Comic Con featured local game development companies and maker spaces with their own section. I would list them all, but I’m afraid I would leave some out. It was so inspiring talking to Colorado authors, artists and developers who get to make a living being creative everyday.

I could go on and on about the Go Code Colorado Challenge and Denver Comic Con and I probably will in separate blog posts, but you didn’t open this post to read about that so without further ado…

Colorado Tech Weekly #101: Jobs, Growth and New Funding

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

The final judging for Go Code Colorado is this Thursday. This marks the end of 2 1/2 straight months of trying to squeeze my life in between learning, coding and learning and coding. It has made me rethink a few things. I still love making 1s and 0s do all the things I just might have finally figured out how I want to do that.
