Colorado Tech Weekly #254: Net Neutrality, Art and Tech and Tooting My Own Horn

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

This week representatives talk about net neutrality which is vital to the tech industry. There’s also an event about art and tech which are both industries that take creativity and persistence. And I get to toot my own horn and share news about my company, Infinicept. It’s nice to make AND share tech news.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #250: Colorado Tech is Going South… And It’s A Good Thing!

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I like doing everything I can to make sure this blog series is about the entire state so it’s cool to see more events in Colorado Springs and the story from the Canon City Daily Record about another tech partnership that focuses on southern counties in the state. There’s plenty of great, smart tech people outside of the Boulder/Denver area!

I got to be a part of my first software release yesterday! It was exciting and stressful and weirdly anticlimactic. I’m sure today will be busy with fixes.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #245: Discover. Learn. Create. Repeat.

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning (Unless Monday was a holiday. I hope you had a great President’s Day)!

I’m almost 3 months into my career as a software developer. Every day I wonder what I would tell someone who wants to become a developer. I’ve decided the best way to describe the job of a developer is with the four words in the headline.

As a student, whether in a school or learning by ourselves, that process is guided by instructors or ourselves. In a work environment, what we discover and create is usually defined by our clients but the process is still the same.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #226: Overexertion and the Idea of an Amazon HQ2 in Colorado

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Everyone says they want Amazon’s second headquarters to be in Colorado. I admit, it’s a cool idea but I wonder if it’s a good idea. I am wondering a lot of things today, mainly because I overexerted myself last week and I’m super tired, but the question still lingers in my head. What kind of effect would having a large Amazon campus in Colorado have on our tech community? Or a more fun question to consider would be, “What kind of effect would our inclusive tech community have on Amazon?” I think I like considering that question more.

Pro-tip: Don’t renovate a third of your house in 4 days while taking online senior-level college courses and working a more than full-time, high-stress job while managing contract work and a job search. It’s not healthy.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Colorado Tech Weekly #196: It’s All About Community. Thank You For Being Awesome.

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Maybe I’m naive or too optimistic or.. some other word I can’t think of. Maybe I’m still feeling the high of being done with my Calculus 2 course. But I am feeling the love in the Colorado tech community.

I struggle a lot with the question of “What kind of programming do you want to do?” because the technology being used at a company isn’t as important to me as the culture of the company. I’m just happy at the thought of being paid to make 1s and 0s do things with other nice, talented people. There’s a lot of great people in the Colorado tech community who make our community a place where people want to come and work and create and that’s awesome.

Thank you for being awesome. Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #176: Every Tech Job is a Security Tech Job

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

When most people think of cybersecurity they think of antivirus companies and IT commandos in bunkers with entirely too many computer screens who track attacks on a large map while furiously typing away to keep the bad hackers away. The reality is not so sexy. The DDoS attack using IoT devices on Friday and the Denver Post story below highlight the fact that whether you’re designing an operating system for distributed servers or writing code on a internet-connected blinking light you need to be thinking about security.

Everyone involved in creating or maintaining systems needs to consider security when doing our jobs. This cannot be solved with a new technology or a disruptive startup. It requires the paradigm shift mentioned by Ed Rios. Every tech job is a security tech job.
