Colorado Tech Weekly #114: Mind the Talent Gap

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

The Talent Gap is that annoying void between the demand for skilled software developers and the current amount of available skilled software developers. It’s something I’ve heard tech companies talk about since I started this blog over 2 years ago. There have been encouraging efforts by industry groups, companies and tech schools to fill the gap as quickly as they can but filling that gap is still a slow process because the biggest thing that turns new developers into skilled developers is time. It is frustrating for everyone involved. New developers want to have the skills companies need yesterday and companies want more skilled developers 2 months ago!

The best thing companies can do is support these programs, initiatives, schools and the students they teach because they will pay off in the long run. As students, the best thing we can do is keep learning, keep experimenting and show that we want to learn and contribute. Together, with time, effort and focus, we can narrow the Talent Gap.

Colorado Tech Weekly #106: Is there an area of tech that Colorado does not do well?

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

The short answer is “No.” Every once in a while the headlines I compile point out how many different ways Colorado is involved in technology. In this week’s headlines alone we have wireless tech, social media, hardware, startups and 3-D printing. It’s a little mind blowing to think of all the things that are included in tech in Colorado. Then when I try to think of all the money and all the different kinds of people involved my brain shorts out and I have to stare at the wall for a few minutes to let it reboot.

Colorado Tech Weekly #100: A milestone, new buildings, cool jobs and startups

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

This is my 100th CONSECUTIVE Colorado Tech Weekly post and, frankly, I’m a bit surprised. I have a hard time doing anything consistently so for me to post these stories for 100 consecutive weeks is kind of a huge deal.

Speaking of big deals, Boulder Startup Week starts today. I’m going to the Boulder Beta event tonight, if you’re going I’d love to say high. I’ll also be at the CTA Volunteer Celebration next Monday at their cool, new Commons on Champa office. If you’re going to either one of those events, let me know. I’d love to say “Hi” in the real world.

I want to take a moment to thank all of you that read these posts, share them and talk about them. I don’t make any money off of writing these posts (although that probably would be a good idea). This is not a job that I feel forced to do. I do them to get my name out there and because it’s fun. You make it fun. I started off writing about the “Colorado tech industry” but I have changed it to “Colorado tech community” because there is a really cool community here. THANK YOU!

Colorado Tech Weekly #96: My Team is a GoCodeColorado Finalist!

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I signed up for GoCodeColorado because I like the spirit of the competition and just to try out my programming skills outside of homework. I figured it would be a good first experience, a good way to see what a hackathon is like. I ended up in a dynamic, diverse team that is one of 2 finalist groups from the Denver GoCodeColorado challenge!

Our idea is called MentorMatter. The site will make it easy for college students to connect with potential industry mentors. If you want to see some of the reasons why this idea is such a success for Colorado, just check out the first 2 top technology headlines.

If I thought I was excited and scared last week, that was nothing compared to how I feel now. Thanks for the good luck last week! WE WON!

Colorado Tech Weekly #92: TechHire, C-Level and great news for dev students

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Great news this week for people like me! Great news for people who want to become software developers in Colorado. I’m excited for the start of the new TechHire program here as well as Galvanize working towards accountability in immersive education options. The one thing that makes me nervous about dev boot camps is the lack of oversight. This is a great step in the right direction.

I’ll be volunteering at Sports Authority Field this Thursday for CTA’s C-Level @ Mile High event. I hope to see some of you there!

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Last week I was featured in the below article from BuiltinColorado as someone you should follow in Twitter. It feels great to get noticed. It also makes me wonder if I am portraying the person I want to be online.

I started Colorado Tech Weekly because I wanted to stay informed about the Colorado technology industry. I want to stay informed so that when I am ready to apply for software development jobs, I know where I want to apply. I realized that I’m not the only person that can benefit from this information, so I started Colorado Tech Weekly 87 weeks ago to share this information. I’m glad I get to continue this newsletter and I’m thrilled whenever I find out that people get value from these posts.
