Colorado Tech Weekly #278: Reflecting on Success and Creating More

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

We are constantly trying to create more success. It’s to the point that many of us measure success just as a measure of change. If you are just as successful today as you were last year, many people don’t see that as successful and that sucks!

We spend so much time trying to be better than we are now, we often forget to celebrate our current successes. Take some time and celebrate the history of yourself, your company and your community and have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #265: TECHNOLOGY IS MADE OF PEOPLE!!!

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

When interacting with technology and companies it is very easy to get lost in the names of products and titles. However the harder you look, the more you realize that most tech companies are mostly just about a dozen people who believe in each other. That’s it.

Industry groups, companies, conferences, even meetups are nothing without the people who make them happen.

Celebrate the people around you and have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

There are some weeks where I find a theme in the stories I share. There are other weeks where I just rant about something else before presenting the headlines. This week I’m not sure what to do so read all these stories and consider going to as many of these events as you can because I can’t decide.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #169: Startups, EdTech and Cybersecurity

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning (Unless it’s a holiday, hope you had a great Labor Day)!

I could rename Colorado Tech Weekly “Startups, EdTech and Cybersecurity Weekly” but that’s a little long. We could even have multiple newsletters! Tech is a big tent. There could be a Colorado Startup Weekly (there was for a few weeks a long time ago), a Colorado EdTech Weekly, a Colorado Cybersecurity Weekly. Then there’s IoT, aerospace, biotech, gamedev and probably at least 5 other Colorado tech communities that could support a weekly newsletter. It’s awesome!

Speaking of weeks, next week is Denver Startup Week which has turned into a great big deal. I’ll be there on Tuesday and I look forward to meeting you in the real world. Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #152: Finding Opportunities in Colorado is Easy

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Finding opportunities is easy. Taking advantage of opportunities? That’s the difficult part.

With achievement of my degree within sight and a few projects completed it is time for me to take job searching seriously. Last night I started trying to figure out how to get paid for doing something I love. I looked at a few online job postings but this does not seem like a good strategy considering the network of awesome people I’ve cultivated in the last 152 weeks. Then there’s the question of “What is a good strategy?” Should I put my head down and charge at a dream job or should I keep my eye out for other software developer jobs? My heart wants to go for the dream job but my heart also really wants to get out of this job so I can work as a developer full time as soon as possible!

If you have any job searching advice, I’d love to hear it. If you just have a job offer, I’d love to hear that even more!

Colorado Tech Weekly #133: Is ‘I don’t know’ a valid prediction?

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I normally don’t put too much thought into what I write in these paragraphs before the headlines but since I promised predictions I should deliver. I’ve had a hard time figuring out what my predictions should be but I think I figured out a way to make sense of this. So without further ado (I’ve never been a fan of too much ado), my predictions for Colorado tech in 2016 in no particular order:

  • Dev school hype reaches its peak in 2016: I am in no way saying that dev schools are just hype. I think they’re great! I’ve seen many people in Colorado succeed because of dev schools and I watch them with envy while I plug away at my CS degree part time (only 2 year to go!). I’m just saying the hype and excitement around dev schools reaches crazy-pants levels next year.
  • The Internet of Things (IoT) sneaks into real life: There’s a funny thing about personal technology. It’s sold as this great, ground-breaking thing but it is always treated as something “in the future” that seems unreachable. Then one day you look around and that unreachable, ground-breaking technology is everywhere! That day will happen for IoT next year.
  • Cool, sexy tech like driverless cars, virtual reality and artificial intelligence improves but no one appreciates the improvements: Speaking of unreachable, ground-breaking technology, a lot has to happen for those promises to come to fruition. Next year there will be great improvements in these areas, but unless you’re following them closely you won’t really notice.
  • Colorado tech will see constant growth: Speaking of things we don’t notice (I’m getting pretty good at these transitions), the Colorado tech community will continue to grow at a steady pace. This is awesome but since we tune things out when they’re constant, people won’t really notice. I haven’t decided yet if that’s good or bad yet.

I have typed entirely too much here. Here’s the news. Happy new year!

Colorado Tech Weekly #132: Zayo does good, FullContact makes a good purchase and I make good predictions!

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Last year I made 3 Colorado tech predictions for 2015, let’s see how i did (SPOILER ALERT: I did pretty good):

  1. I predicted that WellTok gets some local competition in health tech and I NAILED IT! Check out the stories below about Catalyst and the interview with Tom Highley in the Confluence Denver article to see how well I nailed this one.
  2. I predicted that Colorado’s information security industry doubles. Anytime you quantify a prediction, there’s a good chance you can’t prove you got it right. The information security industry has definitely grown in Colorado, but I can’t say if it doubled. 2014 saw the first big data breaches. I think 2015 is the year companies try to fix things themselves. I think 2016 will see a lot more of security companies providing more services to other companies. Security companies aren’t that loud so it’s hard to make good predictions about them. I generously give myself half credit.
  3. I predicted that “The next big thing” comes out of Galvanize. I was thinking that a startup that got its start in Galvanize would make a big splash so in that regard, I got this wrong. However, Galvanize seemed to focus a lot more on developer education than startups. Developer boot camps are definitely a huge deal but I can’t give myself credit for getting this one right.

Next week look for my 2016 predictions! They will not be as nearly as expansive as FreeWave’s predictions in their article below.

Also speaking of spoilers, I have not seen the new Stars Wars yet. I’m going to see it tomorrow. I am very impressed and thankful for all the people I follow on Twitter who have seen the movie at least once and have not spoiled it for me. You all rock. Merry Christmas and may the force be with you!

Colorado Tech Weekly #102: Winning the Go Code Colorado Challenge, Visiting Denver Comic Con… Oh and Colorado Tech News

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning (Unless it’s a holiday. I hope you had a great Memorial Day)!

This past week has been amazing!! Thursday night my Go Code Colorado team, MentorMatter, was one of 3 teams that won a $25,000 contract with the State of Colorado. I worked as a developer on the team to create our site using the Meteor JavaScript framework. I had no prior knowledge of Meteor before the challenge so it was amazing to be able to re-familiarize myself with JavaScript, learn Meteor and contribute to the project all in less than a month. Phew!

This weekend my wife and I got to experience our first ever Comic Con at Denver Comic Con thanks to 2 passes I won from the CTA C-Level event (Thanks for that, by the way)! It was overwhelming, amazing, fun, crazy and amazing (yes, I know I said amazing twice). I loved that Denver Comic Con featured local game development companies and maker spaces with their own section. I would list them all, but I’m afraid I would leave some out. It was so inspiring talking to Colorado authors, artists and developers who get to make a living being creative everyday.

I could go on and on about the Go Code Colorado Challenge and Denver Comic Con and I probably will in separate blog posts, but you didn’t open this post to read about that so without further ado…
