Colorado Tech Weekly #258: When Turning Ideas into Tech, The Details Matter

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

This week’s headlines have me thinking about details. As a business-person or entrepreneur you are going to tell someone with some technical knowledge “I want to do a thing” and they are going to ask you “Yeah, but how?” which makes me want to ask: At which point is it best to answer the question “Yeah, but how?” At the project management level? UX level? When acquiring resources? When creating the programming?

When is it best to answer that question? Easy! It’s at every level! The more you’re willing to answer questions about the details, the better work you’ll get out of every step of your process.

On the other side, I don’t think it’s ever a bad idea as a developer, project manager, or anyone involved in the implementation process to ask “Yeah, but how?” It’s important for everyone involved to be on the same page.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #237: Prediction Proven Correct and My 2018 Goals

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary Flag Colorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

The week between Christmas and New Years is often sparse when it comes to events. This week is no exception but there are 3 if you want to go check them out.

I was excited to see Tamara Chuang’s article about the Year of the Exit in Colorado tech. It gave me confidence that I really was correct about there being less tech companies in Colorado by the end of this year.

I said last week that I would make my predictions for next year but I have no idea. I always like the idea of the next big thing coming out of Colorado, but that’s hard to predict. Instead I have 2 goals for next year now that I have my dream job and because I will graduate this spring so I should have some more time:

  1. Pass on the main editorial tasks of Colorado Tech Weekly to another student who is passionate and excited to be more involved the Colorado Tech community.
  2. Become a regular member of at least one Colorado tech meetup.

Have a great week and a great rest of the year!

Colorado Tech Weekly #213: Local Tech Podcasts and Python Events

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Just over a year ago I tried adding a podcast to this blog series and found out that doing podcasts is hard. If your favorite podcast is updated inconsistently, it’s because the creator has realized just how hard it is to create and post podcast episodes. This week I wanted to point out 2 great local tech podcasts:

  • Colorado TechCast: This podcast is hosted by local tech enthusiast, Trapper Little, and  just started with great interviews by local tech community members. Trapper asked me to guest-host the show and although I REALLY wanted to, I just don’t have the time to participate and that sucks.
  • Turing School Podcast: This is a great listen for anyone who is looking to get their first job as a software developer. Even though the podcast is geared towards Turing students, it’s a great resource for all of us. Even this Computer Science student.

There are a few other good local tech podcasts, but if I start trying to list all of them you’ll never get to read the news. I’ve highlighted a few Python meetups this week. I have an AI course coming up in a few months so I’m curious to try out Python. It is a language used for AI, right?

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #118: The Work That Causes the Headlines

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Every once in a while I have to remind myself that most of the news behind these headlines are the culmination of months or years of work. The awards, acquisitions, mergers and events are the headlines but the important part is the work and time put into those events long before they become headlines.

Colorado Tech Weekly #109: From the Front Range to the Western Slope

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I know that most of the biggest and loudest tech companies are in front range cities like Denver, Boulder and Colorado Springs but I pride myself on truly making this newsletter about tech companies throughout the state. That’s why this week I’m excited about the Xconomy article about the Telluride Venture Accelerator‘s newest class of tech startups and to be able to promote CTA’s Tech Tour that starts a week from today. I would be all for driving around the state, visiting tech companies. I’m jealous.
