Colorado Tech Weekly #266: Leadership Matters and Fintech Grows in Denver

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

The 2 subjects of this week’s headline directly affect me on a daily basis. As an employee of a startup with less than 10 people, our company is not only affected by the decisions made by our leadership but also the moods and attitudes that are shown by our founders, our managers and each of us. Leadership is not dependent on job title in a small organization, however the people with the big job titles have the most direct affect on the mood and culture of an organization. I’m excited to see what’s in store for OpenWorldLearning and Colorado Technology Association after their leadership changes.

My startup is also involved in fintech and seeing The Funding Circle opening an office here and seeing OnDeck grow their presence here makes me excited about the industry I get to work in.

I hope there’s something to get you excited this week! Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #170: Dizzion and GoSpotCheck Grow, Denver Celebrates Startups and Amazon Office Opens in Broomfield

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Today officially starts Denver Startup Week! I have purposely left DSW events out of this post for two reasons. The first reason is that the DSW website is an excellent and easy to use resource for all things DSW.

The second reason is that I’m a little bitter about DSW. Last week I was all excited to spend Tuesday downtown at panels, meeting people and participating in the Cognizant Quick Left hackathon however life had other plans for me. My house needs foundation repairs so instead of spending Tuesday meeting you cool people in real life I will spend it moving everything out of my basement to get my basement slab repaired.

Things don’t always go as planned but they often work out for the best. Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #150: Almost All The Demos

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

An amazing week of events coming up for student developers: Demo displays by RefactorU, Turing School and DaVinci Coders, tech fairs from Maker Boulder and Open World Learning and a high school team coding competition by Lockheed Martin. If you like seeing what things new developers are learning and creating, this is a good time for you.

Speaking of being a student it appears my time away from schoolwork is coming to a quicker end than I had realized. After a month off, My Computer Organization/Architecture course starts a week from today, not 2 weeks from today like I had originally thought. I’m looking forward to the course, though. Some might say developers don’t need to know about hardware as much anymore because so much code is built on top of layers of abstraction but I call BS on that. Between the amazing amount of devices already plus the IoT devices hardware is pretty darn important. Also someone still has to write those layers of abstraction so don’t disregard that hardware knowledge.

Just because I wasn’t doing schoolwork for a month doesn’t mean I wasn’t learning. In fact I’m pretty darn proud of my month off. I developed a Ruby on Rails web app for my police department which I will post to GitHub this week to show off. I made a game for Ludum Dare 35 called “Zorg’s Crash Landing.” It’s a very simple puzzle-like game that I did not work on as much as I would have liked, however I actually made a thing so that’s awesome. I also started learning Sphero capabilities with my entirely too long Sphero Android App Reviews post. I just started playing with the Sphero educational apps so look for that soon.

Remember, no more podcast so look for me to post something interesting this week. Looking at how much I’ve typed already I apparently have a lot to say.

Colorado Tech Weekly #131: At Least 3 Reasons to Be a Software Developer in Colorado

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Welcome to The Last Real Week of Work in 2015! It’s the last week in the year without a holiday which means it’s really the last week of the year where your coworkers will have any focus (That is, if you don’t count Friday “OMG Star Wars!!!”). Of course it’s THEM who aren’t focused. You’re still working hard. I’ll put in a good word with your boss for you.

This is one of those weeks that reaffirms my belief in my goal of becoming a software developer here. We have companies here that make awesome things. The pay is high. Companies want to come here. Oh and that’s not including all the other reasons why it’s great to just be living in Colorado.

The upcoming events are getting a little sparse because it’s the end of the year, so if you know of anyNext week I will be reviewing my 2015 predictions for 2016.

Colorado Tech Weekly #130: Writing and Programming

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Last month was NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writers’ Month). I was challenged by a friend to participate. She got about 20k words of the 50k word challenge written. I wrote… zero.

I planned and brainstormed. I explored characters and settings. However I didn’t write any of the story because it seemed so… daunting. It’s amazing how similar programming is to writing. To succeed at either one, you need plenty of focus, passion and organization. I hope you find yours for this week. I’m still looking for my focus. I’m pretty sure I put it around here somewhere.

Colorado Tech Weekly #120: TeamSnap, Wayin, Denver Startup Week

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

The organizations mentioned in my headline have taken a few of the things I have done and made them successful and awesome. I helped found a figure skating club. TeamSnap would have been an amazing tool for the club and probably still would be. I’ve spent the past 2+ years combing social media for people and organizations related to the Colorado tech community. Wayin could probably find that in 10 minutes. And I spent 2 years struggling to run my own business. Pay attention to the right people at Denver Startup Week and you can learn every lesson I learned plus 10 more within a week. I guarantee you it will also be more fun.

I have an interview for a promotion tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Colorado Tech Weekly #76: A tech drive and 100 companies

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

“Hi” to everyone I met at the RefactorU job fair! It was a good event. I highly suggest anyone looking into changing careers into tech to go to a job fair and ask questions. It’s amazing how helpful recruiters are. It makes sense though, the better prepared job-seekers are the easier it should be for recruiters.

Please make sure you check out the link to the Open World Learning tech drive! I was excited to see that most of the companies listed in the Top 100 digital employers post have been mentioned in Colorado Tech Weekly. For those I haven’t mentioned, I’m looking forward to learning about you!

Colorado Tech Weekly #42: Little Bit of Everything. Startups, 3D printing, Education and Media

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Last week I wrapped up my journey into UX Design. I didn’t finish my journey, I just wrapped it up for now. It’s a much bigger subject than I realized and I have a new respect for those that do it as a profession. On Wednesday, I picked up the Ruby on Rails Tutorial book. I spent all day Sunday troubleshooting tools that I only halfway understand so I could learn and develop with Ruby on Rails. Self-directed learning is a lot like the TARDIS, it doesn’t always take me where I mean to go, but it takes me to where I need to be.

I hope you check out Open World Learning’s request for volunteers. Few things are more fun than helping kids get excited about technology. I will get to do just that tomorrow as I am hosting a Hour of Hardware event at my daughter’s elementary school to compliment the Hour of Code event we hosted in the fall. Wish me luck!

Colorado Tech Weekly #37: Accolades, Innovation and Internships

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

This is the 5th CTW post where all 10 stories are about Colorado. I wonder if I could do that every time. I bet I could! However so much of what goes on outside Colorado affects our industry here I can’t just focus on our awesome state alone. Maybe I should consider doing a local edition and a national edition? I’ll think on that later. It’s finals week for me this week so I’ll think on it later.

Speaking of later, next week I get to volunteer for CTA’s C-Level at Mile High on March 6th. It’s the biggest, coolest, geekiest, techiest way to meet some of Colorado’s top-level technology decision makers by bidding for their time, literally! Here are a few tips and tricks for winning those auctions. Hope to see you there!
