Colorado Tech Weekly #200: Zayo and eBags Get New Leadership, Some Job Tips and a Twitch Stream

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

There is only one thing I’ve done consistently for 200 weeks in a row… and this is it!! I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for this long. I had these big ideas that when I got to number 200 I’d do some sort of meetup event or restart the podcast but those require much more social interaction than I’m capable of doing. Thank you for reading and sharing these posts. I really enjoy doing what I can to advertise the great people who make up the Colorado technology community.

Even though I won’t be doing a meetup or a podcast, I have decided to do a weekly Twitch stream. My plan is to do CodeEval challenges in Java and C#, then find a way to incorporate those challenges into a simple game using Unity3D. Why? Because I want to write more code and this is a good way to keep me honest. So if you’re so inclined, I’ll be on Twitch on Tuesday, from 4p-7p here: https://www.twitch.tv/chickenheed

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #147: Learning Takes Time

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

This week a few of the articles have to do with new developers learning programming. Turing adds a new Front-End development program. Businesses are still worried about talent shortages. And the BuiltinColorado article asking 7 local developers about their learning journey is great!

One of my favorite answers from the BuiltinColorado article is from Joanne Cheng, “It takes a lot of time to learn what you need to know.” It’s difficult as a developer to find out what is important to learn and that’s even before you start learning the important things. Then once you have it figured out, it all changes and you get to start over again!

Colorado Tech Weekly #146: Which is Better? Planning or Improvising?

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

The answer to the headline is “Yes.” I know. It’s a trick question and it’s Monday and you’re trying to figure out what it was you ate yesterday that has you feeling a bit off today (maybe the 5 pounds of chocoloate?) and you’re still trying to readjust after the snow storm interrupted your week last week so it’s not nice to give you a trick question and I’m sorry.

Planning is important regardless of what all the shotgun innovators tell you. If you want to do something well, you have to make a plan. Most of the headlines I share every week are the results of people setting a goal, making a plan and spending years going for it. Today I finished my Software Requirements Specification for my app for my police officers. It feels nice to have a plan.

But what about improvising? The best improvisation comes after the plan. It’s like the rescheduled events listed this week. There was a plan but things got changed, so you improvise and continue on. This is the best kind of improvisation.

Plan. Then improvise. Please.
