Colorado Tech Weekly #182: Getting Geared Up for 2017

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I like when I can find themes in the weekly headlines that I share. This week it seems as if most of Colorado tech is ramping up to get things done and announced before enjoying the end-of-the-year holidays. Once again I was faced with way more than 10 events I wanted to share. I really do need to find another way to share those. Speaking of the end of the year I should probably review my 2016 predictions and start brewing my 2017 predictions.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #156: Open Source, Job Searching, Security

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Lately I’ve had issues finding themes in the headlines, but this week we get three!

I made my first open source contribution about a week ago. It was just a typo fix on a SDK website but it made me realized how much I misunderstood pull requests and it was nice to finally make one. To fit that theme we have an OSCON 2016 (Open Source Convention) recap and a post about open source development from another developer, Brian Hartz.

I am looking for a job as a software developer (Check out my resume) and I got to meet Brian Schooley with Aventeer last week who coached me on great ways to improve my Aventeer profile (I haven’t improved it yet) AND improve my online presence in general which was awesome! I will never turn down job searching advice, especially from Brian.

This week I also feature a customary post from BuiltinColorado about companies that are hiring and, if you’re looking to get started in a tech career, really check out the TEC-P Orientation Session hosted by Tuliva. They’re hosting 3 orientations this week on the 8th, 9th and 13th but I only listed one to show off other events.

I found out recently that my police department actually wants to use my Trespass Notice Web App! That means I need someone to check the security of the app to make sure no one can gain any unauthorized access. Police departments tend to like secure things. Speaking of security, Denver-based Inversoft released their 2016 Guide to User Data Security and SecureSet is hosting a talk on Application Security which I should probably go to.

Speaking of going to things, I’ll be at the Denver Mini Maker Faire on Saturday finding cool things to blog about so say “Hi” if you see me there. I won’t go on too long about things.

Speaking of going on too long about things, I’ve typed well enough for one CTW post. Here’s your news. Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #125: Things improved, soapbox avoided and GO VOTE!

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Tomorrow is ELECTION DAY! I know there’s no large-scale elections, but honestly the local elections impact our lives more than the big ones. I could easily jump on a soapbox about this but I’ll cut myself off before I get going. However, if you live in Jefferson County and still haven’t decided who to vote for, contact me and I’ll help you out.

I am homework free for the rest of the year, so look forward to some project updates, new projects and general blog posts about learning programming. I’m looking forward to expanding my voice on this site, instead of just churn out a top 10 list every week. That’s not to say I don’t like my top 10 lists. I do. They look like this…

Colorado Tech Weekly #122: True Crime Edition

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

You probably don’t know this, but as much as I love talking about the Colorado technology community, I don’t work in the industry. Last week I celebrated my 10 year anniversary as a 911 police dispatcher and, even better, I still have my sanity! At least that’s what the voices tell me. I like when the tech industry and law enforcement work together well like in the Level 3 story below. I am not as much of a fan of the SofTec story, but it’s good to see people like that get caught.

Colorado Tech Weekly #118: The Work That Causes the Headlines

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Every once in a while I have to remind myself that most of the news behind these headlines are the culmination of months or years of work. The awards, acquisitions, mergers and events are the headlines but the important part is the work and time put into those events long before they become headlines.

Colorado Tech Weekly #90: Lawmakers talk drones, tech jobs and data centers

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

If you’re not familiar with the tangled web that intertwines business, the tech industry and government in Colorado then that’s OK because I’m not that familiar with it either. But I know it’s there!

While big, national arguments of things like net neutrality make big headlines most government decisions that affect our industry are made at the state level. So let your state representatives know you’re paying attention!

The Colorado Technology Association does some public policy advocacy, but the more individuals we have involved, the better chance we have of getting the best help for our industry. Speaking of CTA, I’ll be at the C-Level training tonight, so if you’re there say “Hi”. Actually even if you’re not there, you can say “Hi”.

Colorado Tech Weekly #32: Overwhelming events and mobile contradictions

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local events every Monday morning!

Well my first Built in Brews event was… overwhelming. If you are ever in doubt about the vibrancy of the tech startup scene in Denver, go to one of those events. Your doubts will easily be put to rest. I forgot how loud networking events can get. I also forgot how futile they seem when you don’t have anything to ask of or offer other people. I also learned that admitting ignorance to someone that is 10 years younger than me is much easier to do behind a keyboard than it is face-to-face.small-logo

Speaking of large, overwhelming events, I have signed up to volunteer for the CTA C-Level @ Mile High event on March 6. I also signed up to help market the event online, so be prepared to see me mention it a few times. The only other CTA event I’ve been to was the APEX Conference last summer, so if it’s anywhere as organized as APEX was, it should be a good time.
