Colorado Tech Weekly #92: TechHire, C-Level and great news for dev students

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Great news this week for people like me! Great news for people who want to become software developers in Colorado. I’m excited for the start of the new TechHire program here as well as Galvanize working towards accountability in immersive education options. The one thing that makes me nervous about dev boot camps is the lack of oversight. This is a great step in the right direction.

I’ll be volunteering at Sports Authority Field this Thursday for CTA’s C-Level @ Mile High event. I hope to see some of you there!

Colorado Tech Weekly #79: 10 Different Areas of Tech

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Sometimes I try to write headlines that summarize the 10 articles I feature. Most of the time, that’s really hard to do. This week is no different. Everything from video games to satellite surveillance, cloud computing to education and beyond. It’s amazing how many things technology touches and how much of that happens here in Colorado.

I just finished 2 courses at Regis. That doesn’t mean I stop learning now that class is over, I just get to choose what it is I learn. Trying to narrow it down is tough. Have a happy Monday!

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Woohoo! It’s Computer Science Education Week! Last year I volunteered to help out with the Hour of Code at my daughter’s elementary school. It was a blast. So this year I get to be in charge of the Hour of Code at the school so we’re cranking it up a notch. Forget ONE hour of code, we’re doing FIVE hours of code. One hour each day. I’m so excited!

Colorado Tech Weekly #69: Expansion in Colorado Springs, finding things in Steamboat and Colorado has the best ‘Outside’ companies

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Would it surprise you to learn that over 1/10th of the companies listed on Outside’s ‘100 Best Places to Work’ were Colorado tech companies? It didn’t surprise me either, but it’s still nice to hear. It’s like when my wife tells me I’m awesome. It’s something I already know, but it’s nice to hear it from someone else.

A note about my news sources: Lately a lot of the stories I’ve found have come from CTA’s  news aggregation site Digital Colorado. Since they post a summary and a link to the original story I don’t often link directly to Digital Colorado because I don’t want you to have to click a link to click a link to read a story. That being said, If you want your tech news aggregated more often than once a week, you should definitely check them out!

Colorado Tech Weekly #52: Consistency feels good

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

There are 52 weeks in a year. This is my 52nd CTW post, so it makes sense that I’ve been at this for a year straight! But when I look back, CTW #1 was posted on June 16, 2013 so I’m feeling a bit off. I’ll dance to a year of consistency anyway because I can!

June must be a good time to start covering technology and innovation in Colorado. Congrats to one of my favorite news sources, InnovatioNews, on their 2 year anniversary! I hope I’m always a year behind you.

Colorado Tech Weekly #39: Taking it one step at a time in awesome Colorado

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I think it’s about time I stop being surprised by the amount of tech news in Colorado. This is the 3rd week in a row that all 10 stories are from Colorado and I love it!

I had a blast volunteering for C-Level @ A Mile High on Thursday! It was amazing to talk to, and work with, so many people who have already achieved milestones in their careers that I can only dream about right now. It’s like running a marathon where the path doubles back on itself. I got to briefly see people who are way ahead of me and I want to be there! I gotta take one step at a time though. I’ll get there eventually.

Colorado Tech Weekly #32: Overwhelming events and mobile contradictions

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local events every Monday morning!

Well my first Built in Brews event was… overwhelming. If you are ever in doubt about the vibrancy of the tech startup scene in Denver, go to one of those events. Your doubts will easily be put to rest. I forgot how loud networking events can get. I also forgot how futile they seem when you don’t have anything to ask of or offer other people. I also learned that admitting ignorance to someone that is 10 years younger than me is much easier to do behind a keyboard than it is face-to-face.small-logo

Speaking of large, overwhelming events, I have signed up to volunteer for the CTA C-Level @ Mile High event on March 6. I also signed up to help market the event online, so be prepared to see me mention it a few times. The only other CTA event I’ve been to was the APEX Conference last summer, so if it’s anywhere as organized as APEX was, it should be a good time.

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local events every Monday morning!

There are 52 weeks in a year. This is my 26th weekly post. What does that mean? It’s another milestone! I’ve now been doing these posts for half a year and I still enjoy it.

Speaking of weeks, this week is Computer Science Education Week and I get to celebrate it by volunteering at Mortensen Elementary (my daughter’s school) to help out with their Hour of Code program on Tuesday. I’m very excited!

Speaking of Tuesday, this Tuesday is Colorado Gives Day. Colorado Gives Day makes it really easy to donate to local charities by putting all the information in one place. You can get more information on 2 of my favorite charities here: Colorado FIRST and KidsTek.
