Colorado Tech Weekly #267: Big Names, Small Names and New Names

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

One of my favorite things about doing this blog is putting the news about the big name companies next to the lesser known companies because big tech news is big tech news regardless of the size of the company.  I am also constantly surprised to find Colorado tech companies that I don’t know about. It really amazes me to think about how big our tech community really is.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #249: Bigger Offices and Rural Broadband

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

I’m a big fan of doing more to expand broadband into rural areas. One reason for this is completely selfish. I love the idea of having a nice house in a small town while being able to contribute code remotely to amazing projects. My other reason is more altruistic. People who live in rural areas should be offered the same services and opportunities that those of us in metro areas have.

It’s also cool seeing companies announce expansions in space and people. When our tech companies feels comfortable enough to get more space and hire more people, it’s a great sign for our tech community.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #243: Move Fast and Name Things

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

The hardest thing that programmers have to do is name things. I’m learning that the business world is not immune to this issue either. I highlighted the story about WorldPay/Vantiv/Mercury Pay cuz I’ve been able to use Vantiv’s info for my day job work and it points out the issue with names. When you’re moving fast and growing and acquiring and being acquired, how much time should you spend renaming and rebranding to make work easier?

There seems to be an artificial permanence to the names of things. It’s frustrating in a different kind of way. I’m not sure what to do about it or if anything should be done.

I’ll be at the Go Code Colorado Kickoff on Wednesday. I’m not participating in the challenge, but I really like the people who run and mentor the chalenge.

Have a great week!

Colorado Tech Weekly #159: New Executives for Soundwall, Optiv and Massroots

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

This week there’s a new CEO, a new CIO and a new CTO in Colorado; Our amazing growth in Colorado tech seems to be slowing to just “really really good growth”; and I celebrate 3 years of Colorado Tech Weekly.

3 years and 2 weeks ago I posted my very first Colorado Tech Weekly post. I had big dreams of it being an ongoing thing, but having started a few blogs before I was realistic that it wouldn’t happen. Well it’s good to see my big dream pay out. When I look at all the projects I’ve worked on and realize all the things I’ve learned in the past 3 years I’m a little bit amazed with myself. I am excited and curious to see what I could do if I were given 40 hours per week to write code and solve problems instead of trying to fit it in around working graveyard shift, school and life in general. If you’re curious too, check out my resume page!
