Colorado Tech Weekly #119: Boulder, Leaves and Change

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

“The only constant is change” said someone who says things that other people repeat. This is CTW #119 and by pure coincidence I drove up Highway 119 yesterday to look at the changing leaves. I also drove through Boulder to come back home after driving through the mountains. It also appears that most of our tech news this week goes through Boulder.

Colorado Tech Weekly #117: Pushing the Boundaries of Real Space, Sci-Fi Space, Job Space and Spacing Out

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning (Unless it’s a holiday. I hope you had a great Labor Day weekend)!

Space is all about pushing boundaries and pushing boundaries is a popular thing to do in Colorado. We have the Orion capsule at Lockheed Martin that pushes the boundaries of space exploration. Sphero is pushing the boundaries of robotic toys with the BB-8 and MassRoots and other marijuana-focused tech companies are helping to make marijuana legalization find its footing as an acceptable industry. Pushing boundaries is exciting!

I pushed my own boundaries this weekend and attended the Pebble Rocks Boulder Hackathon. It turned out that I pushed too far and was unable to finish the hackathon. It was very disappointing but definitely a very good learning experience.

Colorado Tech Weekly #111: Made-to-Order Hackathons, EAGLE-Net Gets a Reboot and DaVinci Will Move to Westminster

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Lord of the RIngs has dragons, elves and an entire world that is completely made up, but one of the most creative things to come out of that story for me is the number “eleventy-one”. I love that this is CTW number eleventy-one.

It seems like almost every week I’m excited for the stories I share. I’m very excited to see EAGLE-Net get a reboot with Zayo. EAGLE-Net is a project to get better internet access to public places in rural parts of Colorado. Doing anything with technology on a large scale over a large area is difficult to do correctly. I have confidence in Zayo. I wish them luck!

Colorado Tech Weekly #108: I Need More Ways To Say “Growing”

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

This week has all the signs of growth in the Colorado tech community. We have a Colorado connection partnership which I always love seeing, two acquisitions for Colorado companies and the other normal signs of growth. I’m not complaining about the growth, I just wish I had more ways to phrase it. I think I need to start using a thesaurus.

In case you missed it, and you probably did because you were too busy celebrating Independence Day, I wrote my second “What I’ve Learned About the Colorado Tech Community” post on Friday to celebrate 2 years of Colorado Tech Weekly. I’d love to hear what you think. Thank you for reading!

Colorado Tech Weekly #106: Is there an area of tech that Colorado does not do well?

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

The short answer is “No.” Every once in a while the headlines I compile point out how many different ways Colorado is involved in technology. In this week’s headlines alone we have wireless tech, social media, hardware, startups and 3-D printing. It’s a little mind blowing to think of all the things that are included in tech in Colorado. Then when I try to think of all the money and all the different kinds of people involved my brain shorts out and I have to stare at the wall for a few minutes to let it reboot.

Colorado Tech Weekly #102: Winning the Go Code Colorado Challenge, Visiting Denver Comic Con… Oh and Colorado Tech News

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning (Unless it’s a holiday. I hope you had a great Memorial Day)!

This past week has been amazing!! Thursday night my Go Code Colorado team, MentorMatter, was one of 3 teams that won a $25,000 contract with the State of Colorado. I worked as a developer on the team to create our site using the Meteor JavaScript framework. I had no prior knowledge of Meteor before the challenge so it was amazing to be able to re-familiarize myself with JavaScript, learn Meteor and contribute to the project all in less than a month. Phew!

This weekend my wife and I got to experience our first ever Comic Con at Denver Comic Con thanks to 2 passes I won from the CTA C-Level event (Thanks for that, by the way)! It was overwhelming, amazing, fun, crazy and amazing (yes, I know I said amazing twice). I loved that Denver Comic Con featured local game development companies and maker spaces with their own section. I would list them all, but I’m afraid I would leave some out. It was so inspiring talking to Colorado authors, artists and developers who get to make a living being creative everyday.

I could go on and on about the Go Code Colorado Challenge and Denver Comic Con and I probably will in separate blog posts, but you didn’t open this post to read about that so without further ado…

Colorado Tech Weekly #99: Is Colorado the best place for women in tech?

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

It was almost a year ago that I bragged about the great network of IT women in Colorado. There are some great groups and inspiring leaders here and many of them are women.

This week’s headlines and events are just a nice reminder. When I get serious about my job search, I hope I can find a friend to search with so I can go to some of those great WomenWhoCode events like the interviewing panel highlighted in the Events section. Speaking of helpful, inspiring people, this Sunday is Mother’s Day. Happy Mother’s Day, Mom!

Colorado Tech Weekly #90: Lawmakers talk drones, tech jobs and data centers

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

If you’re not familiar with the tangled web that intertwines business, the tech industry and government in Colorado then that’s OK because I’m not that familiar with it either. But I know it’s there!

While big, national arguments of things like net neutrality make big headlines most government decisions that affect our industry are made at the state level. So let your state representatives know you’re paying attention!

The Colorado Technology Association does some public policy advocacy, but the more individuals we have involved, the better chance we have of getting the best help for our industry. Speaking of CTA, I’ll be at the C-Level training tonight, so if you’re there say “Hi”. Actually even if you’re not there, you can say “Hi”.

Colorado Tech Weekly #85: New. Better. More. Bigger. Faster.

Colorado Tech Weekly Binary FlagColorado Tech Weekly brings you the top 10  technology stories of the past week and the best upcoming local tech events every Monday morning!

Every week, things in Colorado are new, better, more, bigger and faster. It can be intimidating when you’re looking to get into the software development world. However instead of it being intimidating, I choose to think of it as a good sign. As long as the industry continues to grow and change, there’s room for new developers.

I may be saying these things more for myself than anyone else. Make this week better than last week! I may also be saying that more for myself than anyone else.
